I pulled into my driveway and sat in the truck a minute before going inside.
Through the kitchen window, I could see the light above the counter where I make coffee every morning. The chair where Helen used to sit. The drawer with the yellow pencils.
“We built something worth protecting,” I said into the dark windshield.
Then I added, “I protected it, Helen. I hope that counts.”
I went inside.
Made coffee.
Sat alone at the kitchen table.
Not lonely.
Alone.
There is a difference a man learns after grief has done its worst and left him standing.
If my story helps one person look twice at a document placed in front of them with a smile, then it is worth telling.

Because if someone slides a paper across your kitchen table and says, “Just sign it. It’s better for everyone,” there is only one correct answer.
Set it down slowly.
Look them in the eye.
Say, “Let me read it over the weekend.”
Then call your lawyer.
