Sarah Abo has explained why she has disappeared from the Today show.

The TV presenter is set to give birth to her first child in weeks, with The Daily Telegraph claiming Sarah was set to go on maternity leave as early as Thursday.

But she hasn’t been seen on the breakfast program since last week and Today Extra co-host Sylvia Jeffreys has filled in alongside Charles Croucher.

But Sarah has now spoken out about why she left a little earlier than expected.

“Copped a bit of a curveball on Wednesday afternoon with high blood pressure and have been in and out of hospital since,” she said online.

“Thankfully I’m in the safe hands of magnificent health professionals taking incredibly good care of bub and me.”

She’s been ordered to rest while doctors monitor her.

The unexpected health issue means she won’t have a major farewell to say goodbye to her colleagues and viewers.

“Thank you for your beautiful messages of love and support, particularly the past few weeks,” she said.

“I seriously pinch myself when I think about how many good people there are out there. So special.

Sylvia, Charles, and Jayne Azzopardi addressed the situation on Wednesday morning and wished Sarah the best of luck with her baby.

“She hasn’t had the easiest pregnancy, and I wish it had been different for her because she deserves that,” Jayne said.

“But I said to her, hopefully having a bit of a rough pregnancy means she’s going to have a dream baby, and I can’t wait to meet him because she’s going to be the best mum.”

Channel 9’s major Today show dilemma as lineup set to massively change

The Today show is in a state of flux at the moment after Karl Stefanovic’s sensational departure last month.

Veteran Nine reporter and presenter Tom Steinfort filled in for Karl while he was on holiday in the UK and in the wake of his “immediate” exit.

But Charles, who is the network’s chief political editor, has now been parachuted into the hot seat for an undetermined time period.

Karl has been a presenter on the Today show for years, but there is speculation he could soon leave.

Interestingly, Charles and Tom were the top two names on Sportsbet’s list for the most likely people to take over Karl’s spot.

But that list has now changed, with Rodger Corser, host of Nine’s gameshow The Floor, now leading the pack at $3 odds.

Tom is just behind at $3.50, followed by Nine’s finance editor Chris Kohler on $6, Charles on $7, and Robert Irwin and Samantha Armytage on $8.50.

But Nine is also seeking to fill Sarah’s role when she eventually goes on maternity leave, and the network will also need a new sports presenter when Danika Mason does the same at the end of the year.

Media commentator Andrew Mercado told Yahoo Lifestyle that it was very likely Nine would look internally to replace Sarah, and likely Danika.

“They’ll be able to get one of their many female reporters to do a stand-in while she has maternity leave,” he said.

Nine insiders told news.com.au that Today newsreader Jayne was a frontrunner for Sarah’s role.

Sylvia’s name has also been thrown in the ring, but those insiders said she commands a “higher salary” and executives are concerned about her dynamics with Karl Stefanovic, who is her brother-in-law.
