“What do you want?” he asked without preamble.
I stood in my kitchen in stocking feet, eating takeout Thai noodles from the carton.
“I want you to stop asking that question like your family’s damage can be solved with a number.”
“Marcus made a mistake.”
“He forged a power of attorney, a manager’s certificate, and attempted to sell an LLC-held building he did not own.”
“He thought—”
“I know what he thought,” I said. “He thought I was too insignificant to matter.”
Dad went quiet.
And there, right there, in the long silence between us, I knew he understood that part was true.
That maybe for the first time in years.
He had thought it too.
Not consciously, perhaps.
Not cruelly, not in ways he would ever admit out loud.

Enough to let Marcus speak about my property like it was a trinket.

I set the carton down.

“He’s your brother.”
“He stole from me.”
“He panicked.”

“He’ll lose everything.”
I walked to the window and looked down at the city.
Somewhere below, someone was taking out trash. A bus turned at the light. A delivery bike cut across the intersection against the signal. Life continued with an indifference I’ve always found comforting.
“I already know what losing everything feels like,” I said. “I learned it without family money cushioning the landing.”
His voice sharpened.
“This is not the same.”
“No,” I agreed. “This time the person falling chose the ledge.”
He hung up on me.
That was fine.
He had run out of persuasive language hours earlier.

The title company settled with Johnson Properties and lost its license.
Marcus was suspended by the bar before the criminal case was even formally indicted.
His firm closed.
His office lease accelerated because of the fraud and loss of licensure.

I could have refused.

“You didn’t have to do that,” he said finally.
“No,” I agreed. “I didn’t.”
There was a pause.
“For what it’s worth,” he said, “I never thought you were small. I just thought you preferred being underestimated.”
I laughed once.
“That,” I said, “is the nicest thing anyone in this family has ever said to me.”
He sounded tired when he answered.
“Maybe that’s the problem.”
By the time the criminal hearing arrived, Marcus looked fifteen years older.
No dramatic courtroom scene.
No shouting.
No confession at the rail.
Just fluorescent lighting, procedural language, legal fatigue, and a man discovering that shame has a bureaucracy.
He pled to fraud and forgery.
No prison, though the district attorney had leverage for it.
Five years’ probation.

The restitution number—eight point five million plus documented costs—was so far beyond his means it might as well have been a moon landing. The judge knew it. We all knew it. Dad refinanced the house again to help with bail and attorneys.
Mom stopped answering calls from half her social circle because sympathy had become expensive to request and impossible to receive once everyone knew the actual story.
Victoria, unexpectedly, was the first to stop lying.
She texted me one Friday night around eleven.

I read it twice.
Then I wrote back.

I almost let it go to voicemail.

Marcus.

“What do you want?”

“I just wanted to tell you something,” he said. “I got a job.”
I leaned back in my chair.
“Doing what?”
“Property management.”
Of all the absurd, poetic things.
I closed my eyes.

“Yeah. I know.”
I let him sit in that.

I had no answer for that.
He kept going.

That word again.

He exhaled.
“Turns out you weren’t boring. You were building a life and I was too arrogant to see it.”
I stood and walked to the window.
The Morrison Building sat three blocks away, sunlight on brick, coffee shop full, physical therapy sign lit, tenants moving through the ground-floor doors in the ordinary choreography that had always satisfied me more than applause.
“Why are you telling me this?” I asked.

I waited.
Then he said it.
“I’m sorry.”

I believed him.

She rolled her eyes.
I liked that too.

Rose pointed at the framed quilt hanging on the far wall of the common room and shouted, “Grandma blanket!”
Every head in the room turned toward it.

The butterfly costume.

The hospital blanket.

Megan looked at it and then at me.
“She asks for the butterfly square every time.”
I smiled.
“Smart girl.”

“The shower?”
She nodded.

I looked at my daughter.

The one standing in front of me now.
“I know,” I said.
She swallowed.
