“We Had a Serious Sit Down!” Scott Cam’s Jaw-Dropping Behind-the-Scenes Confession About His Block ‘Missteps’ Will Leave You Speechless!
The Block host said there were serious discussions about the direction of the reality program after a drama-filled season.
As The Block prepares to return for its 22nd season, host Scott Cam has admitted the long-running renovation show made “a couple of missteps” with its casting in recent years.
The Channel 9 favourite has become known as much for explosive arguments and contestant feuds as its room reveals and auctions, but Scott said producers recognised they had drifted away from what made the series successful.
Scott revealed there had been some “serious sit-downs” behind the scenes to steer the show back in the right direction during an interview with Brisbane breakfast radio show Stav, Abby & Matt today— which he gave from his hospital bed after a knee reconstruction.
“We had a couple of missteps for a couple of years. I feel that probably our casting was a bit off, and we just weren’t heading in the direction,” he said.
“We had some serious sit-downs and chats, and we got it back to grassroots.
“To people that work hard, that people that put their maximum effort in, and that’s where we were lacking.
“We were choosing people that were too young, I feel, and they didn’t have the effort.”
Scott says The Block focus is back on renovating
Scott’s comments come after a string of drama-filled seasons, where contestant blow-ups have often stolen the spotlight from the renovations.
Last year alone, teams clashed over alleged cheating, copying design ideas and personality differences, with the feuds regularly sparking debate among viewers.
The Block‘s 22nd season starts on Sunday, with five new teams renovating luxury family homes in Mount Eliza on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, overlooking Port Phillip Bay.
This year’s season also introduces one of the biggest changes in the show’s history, with contestants living together in a shared house instead of staying in tents or caravans while their homes are made liveable.
Last year, Scott also told Yahoo Lifestyle the 2025 cast was among the best teams the show had featured despite the inevitable disagreements that come with such a high-pressure competition.
“They’ve been, in my view, the best teams that we’ve ever had on The Block,” he said at a launch event in Daylesford.
“That’s not to say that they’re not a punish at times.
“It’s not to say that they argue and fight with each other and other teams.
“It’s not to say that they don’t cause drama and they’re annoying.
“That’s as good as it gets! It could be a lot worse, let me tell you.”
Scott said viewers responded positively after producers shifted the show’s focus back to hard-working renovators, with moments of conflict still emerging naturally throughout the competition.
